Georgia football is gearing up for their second game of the season as Austin Peay is coming to Athens for a Saturday afternoon showdown. Kirby Smart spoke with the media on Tuesday ahead of this game, and the first question he was asked was how he felt Georgia's offensive line played in their 45-7 win against Marshall this past weekend.
Smart used that question as an opportunity to call out his offensive line for not being in good enough shape throughout the game.
"Didn't think we had great stamina in terms of being able to play long drives and stay fresh," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "It was a little bit warm out there, but it's predicted to be even warmer this week. So, we've got to do a really good job of being the best conditioned team, and that's important."
Kirby Smart calls out Georgia's offensive line
Smart made it very clear in the above quote that he doesn't think Georgia's offensive linemen were in good enough shape against Marshall. He believes they were too tired during the middle of drives and were unable to stay fresh for long enough, which is a huge concern considering how many players were rotated in throughout the game.
That is clearly something that is going to have to improve before Georgia's SEC schedule begins next week. However, it wasn't all negative as Smart did share a lot of positives about Georgia's offensive line play from this past weekend's win as well.
"I thought we did some good things in the run game," Smart continued. "We had some play-action pass mishaps between them, the backs, and coordinating some calls. But pleased to have guys that stepped up and played. We were able to play a lot of players in the offensive line, both out of necessity, but also out of getting a lead. So it was really good to get a lot of experience for guys to go in and play the game."
Overall it sounds like Smart has a lot of confidence in his offensive line room going forward, but it's clear that they are nowhere near where he wants them to be right now. Hopefully this group will use this week's game against Austin Peay to really improve their conditioning, that way they are ready to go when the travel to Tennessee in two weeks.
