It is important to recognize just how good Georgia has had it under Kirby Smart even after their disappointing loss to Alabama Saturday night. Smart has brought more success to Georgia than anyone could have ever imagined, so it's important to not forget about that when things go a little sideways.
But Saturday was more than just a game. Saturday was an opportunity for Smart and Georgia to prove they can hang with Alabama. Saturday was a chance for Georgia to show that they can in fact beat the Crimson Tide after all of their failures over the past decade. But Georgia did not take advantage of this opportunity and Smart has now fallen to 1-7 in his career against Alabama.
Knowing how firey and competitve of a coach Smart is, one would assume this would make him extremely mad. But that was not the case during his postgame press conference as his comment on his 1-7 record shows that he isn't bothered in the slightest.
"I mean, what's everybody else's record against them? You've got it? I don't [have it] either,” Smart shared via 247Sports.com. “I don't lose sleep over that because those games have been, like, championship-caliber games, right?”
Alabama snatched Kirby Smart's soul Saturday night
Did Smart forget where he coaches? Does he not remember the goals that he himself made for this program when he was hired 10 years ago? Georgia has a lot of goals, but they all boil down to one key statement. Georgia wants to be the best program in the country.
At times UGA has looked the part during Smart's tenure, but his 1-7 record against Alabama shows that the Crimson Tide are still the top dog in the country. But Smart somehow doesn't seem bothered that this is the reality of the situation. Instead of being disappointed in himself for his failures against Alabama, he instead chose to accept losing to Alabama as the status quo just because everyone else also loses to Alabama as well.
When has Georgia been a program that wants to be like everyone else? Why is it okay to be average and lose to Alabama every time they play just because everyone else does?
This is a quickest way for Smart to lose the fanbase because Georgia fans want nothing more than to beat Alabama again. But unfortunately Smart doesn't seem to care about beating Alabama as much as his fans do, and that is going to leave a big stain on his legacy forever.
