Georgia football's season ended much earlier than anyone was hoping for after they lost to Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. This Georgia team was capable of winning a National Championship this season, so that is one reason why this loss is so heartbreaking.
While that will be the biggest disappointment for Kirby Smart as well, missing out on a massive payday is another reason this loss will sting for him.
Kirby Smart misses out on massive payday after losing to Ole Miss in CFP
Every college football head coach has bonus incentives they can earn every season. This can include making a bowl game, winning 10 games and winning their conference. Smart has a lot of bonus opportunities throughout the year as well, and this season he did earn some of them. He did however leave some serious cash on the table because of Georgia's loss to Ole Miss.
A win over Ole Miss would have earned Smart a massive $750,000 payday. He also would've had a chance to earn two more bonuses if Georgia went on to win their semifinal matchup and a National Championship.
Smart likely isn't too worried about missing out on these bonuses. He is the highest paid head coach in the country and has made enough money to live off of for the rest of his life. So at this point he isn't chasing more money, he is trying to improve his legacy by winning more championships. That however will have to wait until next season because of this loss.
One coach whose pockets got a little deeper ironically enough is Lane Kiffin. Even though he isn't coaching Ole Miss anymore, LSU is honoring the bonuses he would have made based on the Rebels playoff run this year. So Kiffin reportedly made a cool $500,000 for sitting on his couch watching Ole Miss beat Georgia.
