Has anyone ever told you that Georgia football has one of the most talented rosters in the country? This is something that likely every UGA fan has heard for the past few years as Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have signed a top two recruiting class in the country for three years in a row now.
But just how good is Georgia's roster heading into the 2025 season?
There are multiple ways that one could show that UGA has one of the best rosters in the nation, but the simplest way is to look at how many No. 1 ranked recruits they have on their depth chart. For the purpose of this exercise, a No. 1 ranked recruit is any player who was the No. 1 player in the country at their position according to any of the major recruiting sites (247Sports, On3, Rivals). It may seem difficult to land even a few of these players, but Georgia has a whopping 19 on their current roster.
This includes a No. 1 ranked recruit at every position on defense and 11 composite five-stars. So let's jump right in and take a look at who these 19 players are.
Georgia's 19 former No. 1 ranked recruits
Corner: Ellis Robinson
Safety: KJ Bolden
Linebacker: Raylen Wilson, Justin Williams, Chris Cole, Zayden Walker
Defensive Lineman: Elijah Griffin
EDGE: Isaiah Gibson
Wide Receiver: Zachariah Branch
Tight End: Oscar Delp, Jaden Reddell, Ethan Barbour, Elyiss Williams
Running Back: Branson Robinson, Nate Frazier
Offensive Tackle: Monroe Freeling
Kicker: Peyton Woodring
Punter: Brett Thorson, Drew Miller
The Good
Let's begin with the positives that stand out the most. It goes without saying how impressive it is to have 19 former No. 1 players on Georgia's roster, but to have them this spread out between 11 positions is how you build a championship roster.
Many programs throughout the country recruit one or two positions very well, but not many can say they are elite and boast a No. 1 recruit at 11 different positions. So as long as this is the case with Georgia, then they will always be a national title contender.
However, there are a few positions that stand out that clearly have the most talent. Both tight end and linebacker have four former No. 1 recruits on the depth chart. While that does mean it could be difficult to find playing time for them all, that is a good problem to have because the depth at those positions is second to none.
The Bad
While there are 11 positions that have a former No. 1 recruit, there are two glaring spots without one. The first is quarterback. It obviously would be nice to say that Georgia has one of the top QBs in the country on paper, but UGA does have two more than solid options heading into this season in Gunner Stockton and Ryan Puglisi, so the fact that neither of them are a former No. 1 recruits isn't concerning.
However, the offensive line only having one top ranked recruit is a little scary. The offensive line is arguably the position that matters most on a football team that has championship aspirations like Georgia. Poor offensive line play caught up to the Bulldogs this past season, and the fact that they only have one former No. 1 recruit could be a sign of more issues this coming season.
However, if Georgia is able to overcome the "lack of talent" on the offensive line, then the Bulldogs will once again be playing for an SEC and National Championship in 2025.
