One of the main discussions in all of college football over the last few years is the College Football Playoff. The powers at be can't seem to agree upon the correct format for the CFP as heated debates occurred all offseason about if the playoff should expand or not.

Last season was the first edition of the 12-team CFP, and overall it was a massive success. But are people sure the CFP should expand beyond 12 teams? Do more than 12 teams even deserve a shot at winning a National Championship.

The consensus among many college football fans is that 12 teams is already a lot and that there would be no need to expand beyond that. Kirby Smart however revealed what he thinks about CFP expansion, and the below quote from Smart's press conference on Tuesday is very surprising to say the least.

"Yeah, I'm probably like most people, the majority of them, I would love to be able to expand the playoffs if it's done the right way in terms of giving more teams opportunity," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "I think that's what fan bases want. People are not excited about a mid-tier bowl game in some of these programs they're at... So yeah, I'd be for that. You say, well, what about the championship games? I love the championship games. Can you have your cake and eat it too? Can you move the season up, start it, get it done? If you can't and you can only have one of those two, I don't know which one I would pick because it would probably depend on the format."

Smart didn't say what format he would be in favor of exactly, but he is in favor of the idea of expanding the playoff again. The most talked about new format is a 16-team CFP, but the Big Ten recently floated the idea of a 24 or 28-team field.

If the playoff was to expand again, 24 or 28 teams would be far too many. Do people really think teams that aren't even ranked deserve a shot to win a National Championship? Expanding to that many teams also likely would cause conference championship games to no longer exist, and that is something no college football fan should want.

Smart also doesn't sound too thrilled with losing the SEC Championship game, but the idea of expanding the playoff is something he is 100 percent on board with. So even though most Georgia fans are against expansion, maybe they should think about it some more. If Smart thinks it is a great idea, then at the end of the day maybe UGA fans should just trust him and be on board with it as well.
