Being the quarterback for Georgia is a very difficult task. Only the best of the best can do it at a high level, but that is what Gunner Stockton is going to attempt to do this fall for the first time as the full time starter.
Kirby Smart spoke with the media on Thursday, and he shared what the most difficult challenge facing Stockton and the rest of the QBs is in UGA's offense.
"They're getting three options on almost every play," Smart shared via 247sports.com.
"Yeah, the biggest area that's changed is the demand and decision making is put on a quarterback," Smart continued. "I think 2016, you would have said RPOs (run-pass options) were existent and people were doing them. They're at a higher rate now, but it's just a combination of motions and width of the formation."
Gunner Stockton has a difficult task in front of him as Georgia's QB
Smart detailed in the above statement that the most difficult thing for Stockton and the rest of Georgia's quarterbacks is how to handle the various reads they have on every play. Smart shared that Georgia has at least three options every play and how that can be a difficult thing for any quarterback to handle.
It's one thing to be able to go through all of these reads in practice, but it's another to do it in a game. So that may be the reason why Stockton wasn't as sharp as some would have hoped against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff last season.
But that one game shouldn't be held against Stockton because no one would reach their max potential when the first start of their career is on the biggest stage college football has to offer. Most QBs get the luxury of playing a few easy games to start their career before the big matchups begin, but Stockton never got that chance.
Stockton however will be able to ease into the season this year as Georgia opens their season with two easy home games. So after Stockton gets his feet wet in those games, Georgia fans should expect big things from him when SEC play begins week three.
