Georgia football's second week of spring ball is officially underway. As everyone knows, this spring is especially important for the Bulldogs for a lot of reasons, but one of those reasons is due to the large amount of new and inexperienced players on Georgia's roster this season.
One of the positions where there is a lot of youth is wide receiver. Kirby Smart signed a whopping five receivers in their 2025 class, which was headlined by five-star Talyn Taylor. And while stacking all of that talent is very exciting for the future, it can be a difficult thing to manage early on, especially in their first spring when they are living on campus for the first time.
However, Smart spoke with the media on Tuesday about his young wide receivers, and it sounds like he is not thrilled with what he has seen from them so far.
"They've got to get in shape. They're constantly tired at practice. They've got their hands on their hips, exhausted," Smart shared vis 247Sports.com. "I think there's a little anxiety in that. So it's not like it's all, they're not taking more reps. So like the older players might have 25 reps in a practice. They might have 20, but they can't sustain their 20 reps throughout practice. They get really tired. So, you know, they're trying. There's no lack of effort and they're talented, but they've got a long way to go in terms of learning what to do and that's our job."
Is this a concern for Georgia?
Smart clearly stated in the above quote that his freshman wide receivers are lacking when it comes to the amount of reps they are able to take in practice. Considering spring ball is when the most development for each player will occur, that is very concerning to hear.
However, this may not be as bad as Smart is making it seem. Obviously Smart is a perfectionist, so if just one small thing is not up to par he is going to be unhappy. But looking at it from an outsider's perspective, being a little behind on conditioning at this point in the offseason for a true freshman isn't the worst thing in the world.
There are so many things Smart could be upset about that would be much worse. A lack of focus, intensity or willingness to learn would all be much worse than a lack of conditioning. In all reality, it shouldn't take long for each player to get into good enough shape so they can take a full amount of reps in practice, and once they do it might just be a matter of time until Smart is singing their praises.
