The unit that has struggled the most so far this season for Georgia is their secondary. The Bulldogs defensive backs have been torched all season long which includes during Georgia's win over Kentucky where the Bulldogs gave up 225 passing yards against a below average Wildcats team.
Fans are becoming increasingly upset by the lack of progress seen from this group this season, and Kirby Smart appears to feel the same was as well as he called this group a "work in progress" during his postgame press conference.
"That we're a work in progress," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "I mean, we have some bad eye-control moments where guys don't see what they're supposed to see. They will work at getting better."
Kirby Smart believes Georgia's secondary has a lot of work to do
To be fair to Gerogia's secondary, 225 passing yards is an improvement from their first two SEC games. Against Tennessee the Bulldogs gave up 371 passing yards before giving up 280 to Alabama last week. So Georgia's secondary is improving week to week, but that might have more to do with the competition they are playing.
Kentucky is a significant step below both Alabama and Tennessee, so it isn't surprising to see them throw for less yards on Saturday. Alabama also put more of an emphasis on running the ball compared to Tennessee, so that is why they threw for less yards than the Volunteers. But Georgia's secondary overall has not lived up to the standar set in Athens, and that is why Smart is calling them a work in progress.
Their next chance to show they are improving will take place next Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Auburn for a night game. The Tigers on paper are not on the offensive level that Tennessee and Alabama are, but playing in front of their home crowd in that setting will present significant challenges for the entire team.
