The first round College Football Playoff games begin tonight as 7-seed Notre Dame plays host to 10-seed Indiana. This game is especially important for Georgia football as they will face the winner of this game on Jan. 1 in the Sugar Bowl.
ESPN's College GameDay is in South Bend for this game, and during their pregame show the crew interviewed Kirby Smart who joined in on a video call. And during the interview, the Notre Dame fans in attendance were heard chanting "We want Georgia" and "Georgia sucks." Smart did his best to ignore them, but to likely no one's surprise he had to respond to put the Notre Dame fans in their place.
βThey gotta worry about their first game first," Smart said.
Notre Dame needs to learn their place
There is no denying that Notre Dame is one of the top college football programs of all time. However, that has not been the case the last few decades.
Notre Dame usually is among some of the better teams in the rankings each season, but that has more to do with the ease of their schedule than how good their team actually is. But on the few occassions where they are among the best of the best teams, they always lose.
They have made the College Football Playoff two times (excluding this season) and they lost both of those playoff games. Notre Dame also made the National Championship game during the 2012 season, which they were destroyed by Alabama 42-14. So seeing this little recent success for Notre Dame makes it strange that they would call out a program who has won two of the last three National Championships.
And are Notre Dame fans sure they want to give Smart and Georgia any extra motivation ahead of their potential quarterfinal matchup?
Smart said it best, Notre Dame still has to get past a good Indiana team before they even get the chance to share the field with the best program in the country. But wouldn't it just be the best thing if Notre Dame lost to Indiana after their fans acted like this?
