Saturday night was more than just a football game for Auburn. The Tigers retired Cam Newton's jersey on Saturday after the historic run he led Auburn on during his one season with the Tigers in 2010.
Georgia however wasn't going to let Newton celebrate too much Saturday night as they defeated Auburn 20-10 in what was yet another instant classic in this rivalry.
Nweton's legacy will live on forever at Auburn. What he did at Auburn during the 2010 season by winning the National Championship and Heisman Torophy was nothing short of amazing, and even the biggest Georgia fan can't deny that. But Saturday marked a significant moment for his legacy because Kirby Smart one-upped Newton by winning for the ninth time at Jordan-Hare Stadium. That may seem insignificant at first, but nine wins is more home games than Newton ever won at Auburn.
Kirby Smart surpasses Cam Newton during win over Auburn
Newton only played one season at Auburn, so it was impossible for him to rack up a lot of wins during his career as a Tiger. Auburn did finish a perfect 14-0 that season, so Newton won as many games as he could, but Smart has still surpassed Newton when it comes to total wins at Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Newton won eigh thome games during the his career at Auburn, but Saturday marked the ninth time Smart won a football game at Jordan-Hare. Smart won at Auburn twice as a player, three times as a coordinator for Alabama and now four times as Georgia's head coach. Add all of that together and that is nine wins for Smart compared to just eight for Newton.
Newton probably won't lose any sleep over losing this record to Smart, but it is quite funny that Smart was able to pass Newton on the all time wins list at Jordan-Hare on the night his jersey was retired. This is just another reminder for Newton and Auburn fans that even though they had a special season in 2010, the Bulldogs will always finish on top.
