Lane Kiffin is a disrupter in the SEC. Not only does he regularly have his teams competing for championships, but he himself is always finding a way to get under people’s skin.
For the most part he has been unable to do that with Kirby Smart, but Kiffin’s latest move may test their relationship in the coming years.
A former QB at Samford, Ty Hatcher (now 25 ish) has spent seasons at:

Lane Kiffin took top assistant from Kirby Smart
Ty Hatcher spent the last season at Georgia as an offensive assistant coach. For the most part he was a relatively unknown figure in Athens, but his resume speaks for itself. At just 25 years old he has already coached at Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and most recently at Georgia which shows how highly he is regarded in coaching circles.
Unfortunately Kiffin is disrupting Georgia as he has stolen Hatcher from UGA and is bringing him to LSU.
Losing any coach at any point in the year is never a good thing, but losing Hatcher is very difficult to see. He is viewed as an up and coming coach who will eventually make major waves in the coaching ranks at some point in his career. At this point it is just a matter of him earning more experience, and the hope was that he would do that at Georgia. Unfortunately Kiffin has gotten in Georgia’s way and has hired him at LSU.
Georgia does not have LSU on their schedule next season, so they more than likely won’t get a chance at revenge in 2026. That however will change in 2027 when the Bulldogs and Tigers meet for the first time since the 2022 SEC Championship game.
Hatcher more than likely will still be on LSU’s coaching staff at that point, and there’s a great chance he will be one of Kiffin’s top assistants. So while Georgia will wish he was on their sideline, beating him would be a nice consolation prize.
