The transfer portal in college football has officially closed, but there likely will still be a few more entrants we learn about as some players may have filed their paperwork but haven't publicly announced they are in the portal yet. But there was an addition to the portal late Saturday night that should draw the attention of a lot of Georgia football fans.
The one position that Kirby Smart and Georgia have targeted the most in the portal is wide receiver, but unfortunately for Georgia they have not been able to earn a commitment yet. That is why true freshman wide receiver Mike Matthews, who just entered the portal Saturday night, should expect to hear from UGA throughout his recruitment.
Tennessee WR Mike Matthews
Matthews is a freshman wide receiver who has spent one season with Tennessee. This past season he recorded seven receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns while appearing in 10 games for the Vols.
While these stats aren't the greatest, Matthews does have a lot of untapped potential that a new program will look to tap into. This potential is seen based on the fact that he was a five-star recruit in the 2024 class and the No. 26 overall player in the country according to On3.
As mentioned, Georgia has shown a lot of interest in wide receivers since the transfer portal opened, and since they have not earned a commitment yet it would make sense for UGA to get involved here. But Matthews could also be interested in Georgia considering he is originally from the state of Georgia out of high school as well.
Georgia has not been publicly linked with Matthews yet, but this news is still very fresh so no program has had much time to reach out. But it would not be a surprise to see Georgia get involved here in the coming days as Georgia looks to add another wide receiver heading into next fall.
