Mike Bobo deserves credit for keeping pace with Georgia's National Championship teams

Mike Bobo has been one of the most disliked coaches in recent history at Georgia. Seemingly since the the moment he took over Georgia’s offense, fans have been calling for him to be fired, and that hasn’t stopped this season.

But maybe Bobo isn’t so bad after all. Maybe Bobo is actually very good at running Georgia’s offense. In fact, maybe Bobo is running Georgia’s offense at a rate that is just as efficient as UGA’s offense was during their National Championship seasons in 2021 and 2022.

Georgia’s offense is as efficient as they were in 2021 and 2022

The above data shows the percentage of drives for Georgia’s offense that resulted in a touchdown. During 2021 Georgia scored a touchdown on 42 percent of their drives, and in 2022 that jumped to 46 percent. So where is Georgia at so far this season? Right in the middle at 45 percent.

This means that Georgia’s offense is scoring enough touchdowns to keep pace with two of the best teams in Georgia history. Knowing that is the case, are Georgia fans sure they should be blaming Bobo whenever one thing goes wrong?

Georgia’s offense this season has a lot they can improve on this still, no one can deny that. But if they’re scoring touchdowns as often as the 2021 and 2022 teams then maybe Bobo doesn’t deserve as much hate as he’s getting.

To be fair, those championship teams were able to record that data across an entire season which included many games against the best programs in the country, and so far this season Georgia hasn’t faced that kind of gauntlet yet. But if Georgia can continue to operate this efficiently on offense then it might be time to throw some blame at the defense if Georgia drops another game.
