Georgia football is very lucky to have Kirby Smart as their head coach. Ever since Smart became the head coach, Georgia has been one of the best if not the best program in the country.

From multiple SEC and National Championships to countless players sent to the NFL, no matter how you define college football success, Georgia is at the top. That is why Smart has quickly worked his way up to become the highest paid college football head coach in the country.

As of today, Smart makes roughly $13 million per year. That is an astronomical amount of money, but every Georgia fan would tell you that he deserves every penny of it if not more. This high salary is also one of the reasons why Smart likely won’t leave Georgia anytime soon, because no other school could pay him that much.

However, an NFL team would be able to pay Smart this much, and teams over the years have shown interest in hiring him. Smart clearly has never shown any interest in these NFL teams yet, but a new federal bill that was just introduced would give Smart no choice but to move on to the NFL.

New bill would see every top head coach move to the NFL

There are a lot of interesting things in this new bill, but the one thing that should scare Georgia fans is the salary cap for head coaches. This cap would limit coaches to making no more than 10 times the amount it costs to go to their school.

So in Georgia’s case, it costs about $50,000 to attend UGA for an out-of-state student, so this means Smart could only make $500,000 per year. Now that is quite the pay cut.

If this bill becomes law, then no one would be able to fault Smart and every other top head coach for moving on to the NFL, because that large of a salary decrease just doesn’t make sense for them. They’d even be able to make a lot more as an assistant in the NFL too.

So hopefully this bill doesn’t become law, because that would likely immediately end Smart’s run at Georgia and send every other top head coach to the NFL as well.
