Georgia is entering the 2026 season as the No. 3 team in the country. They naturally are one of the favorites to win the SEC and a national championship this season, and Nick Saban believes he knows why.
Saban explained that the teams that have found success in the new era of college football have been able to retain their contributors instead of losing them to the Transfer Portal. He also believes that teams that are older with a lot of experience are set up for success as well. Georgia by no means is old this year, but they are experienced and kept nearly all of their talent from last year's team in Athens that didn't use up their eligibility. According to Saban himself, that is why he believes Georgia can win a national title this year.
“I like Georgia’s team and what I’ve noticed about this new era of college football with lots of transfers and changing rosters, the people that can keep their players and they have an aging team, like Georgia had a very young team last year, but they’re going to be an older team this year, and I think Texas is going to be older and more mature as a team this year so I think that gives you a huge advantage,” Nick Saban said via dawgnation.com.
Nick Saban believes Georgia is equipped to win a national championship
No one knows what it takes to win a championship more than Nick Saban. He is one of the most accomplished head coaches in college football history and he has an argument to go down as the greatest coach of all time, so when he says a team can win a national title eveyone should probably listen.
Saban made a lot of great points about the experience Georgia's roster is bringing back and why that should help them compete for a championship. He however didn't even mention Kirby Smart who has won two national championships and is arguably the best head coach in the sport right now.
Smart can't win a championship on his own though. There's only so much that he can do because it eventually comes down to the players making the plays on the field. Thankfully, as Saban mentioned, Georgia has the makeup of what it takes to win a championship.
Georgia's youth is experienced enough to contend for a championship
One thing Saban mentioned that has led to championships in the NIL era is age. Just last year Indiana won it all while having one of the older rosters in the country. Georgia unfortunately will have one of the youngest rosters this season, but they are experienced.
Georgia's roster, even though it is young, is returning the fifth-most production in the country this season. A big reason for that is because Smart didn't lose many players to the portal and was able to convince them to stay in Athens. That should be key for Georgia this year because they have more production returning than almost every team in the country from a team that just won the SEC.
Only time will tell if this leads to a championship or not, but Saban is buying Georgia's stock and maybe everyone else should too.
