Officials overturn interception during wild scene at Texas Memorial Stadium
Now I can confidently say I have never seen this before in my life. There is the occassional instance in sports history where fans get upset and throw stuff onto the field. The normal fan knows this is not okay, but fans do it sometimes and it is always a bad look for their fanbase and program.
But never have a I seen this move from a fanbase result in anything positive for their team. But that’s exactly what just happened with Texas.
The Longhorns intercepted a pass from Carson Beck in the third quarter only for defensive pass interference to be called to negate the interception. This is where Texas fans decided to throw trash onto the field, causing a delay in the action. During this delay, the refs had ample time to discuss the play that just took place and decided to pick up the flag and allow the interception to stand.
And to make matters even worse, no flag was thrown due to the trash being thrown by the Longhorns’ fans.
This turn of events makes absolutely no sense to me. Whether the refs made the correct call or not is irrelevant to me, the officials shouldn’t be allowed more time to discuss what the call on the field should be because the fans are causing a delay in the game. If the Texas fans acted like normal people and refrained from throwing trash on the field the penalty never would have been overturned. But I guess that doesn’t matter.
Texas followed this incident up by scoring just a few plays later.
Now Georgia finds themselves up 23-15 when they were up 23-0 at the half. Let’s hope the Bulldogs are able to hold on, because if not there are going to be a lot of upset Georgia fans, coaches and players.
And I think they’d have a good argument.
