On3’s ranking of Georgia among college football’s elite makes no sense

On3 has some explaining to do.

Georgia is one of the top programs in the country right now. In fact, they might even be the No. 1 program in all of college football.

That is definitely up for debate and fans from across the country will feel differently, but no one can deny that Georgia deserves to be in that conversation. On3 analyst Josh Pate is one of many people that believe Georgia is one of the best programs in the country, so much so that he ranked them as the No. 2 program right now behind Ohio State.

Ohio State doesn’t deserve to be ranked above Georgia

Before discussing how wrong it is to put Ohio State above Georgia, it’s important to know the criteria Pate used when crafting these rankings. According to Pate, he looked at on field results, talent acquisition, resource pool and organizational stability from the past three years. He also “looked to the future” as well but didn’t specify exactly what that means.

As mentioned, Ohio State is the only team that’s ranked above Georgia. At the end of the day being No. 2 behind a program like the Buckeyes is a great honor, but is anyone sure they should be above Georgia?

When looking at talent, program stability and resources, Georgia and Ohio State are identical. But the on field results is where things tip in Georgia’s favor.

Sure Ohio State won a national title two years ago, but that’s the only thing they have on Georgia. The Buckeyes haven’t won the Big Ten since 2020 and have only beaten Michigan (their biggest rival) once in the last five years. Georgia on the other hand has won the SEC three times since 2020 which includes the last two years. And when looking at Georgia’s success against their rivals it’s getting really difficult to keep track of how many years in a row they’ve beat them.

At the end of the day the takeaway from this ranking should be that Georgia is in an extremely healthy spot. But at the same time it’s hard justifying having Ohio State ranked above UGA right now.
