Every offseason can be a scary time for Georgia football fans. The main reason being the transfer portal is an intimidating thing for every program as any team’s best player can enter the portal out of nowhere. And that has certainly happened at Georgia very recently. But there is also the fear of losing a member of the coaching staff as well, which is exactly what happened to Georgia on Thursday.

According to Matt Zanitz with 247Sports, Georgia assistant quarterbacks coach Montgomery VanGorder is expected to be hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as an offensive assistant.

Philadelphia continues to load up on Bulldogs

VonGorder has been a long time member of Kirby Smart’s staff as he has been with the program since 2019. He has been an intrigual person on Georgia’s offensive staff, specifically with the quarterbacks. As one would likely assume, VanGorder was very good at his job because he helped Georgia take a walk-on QB in Stetson Bennett and turn him into a two-time National Championship winning quarterback. His Georgia ties also run deep because he is the son of former Georgia defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.

VanGorder is a former college QB himself, where he played at Youngstown State and Notre Dame during his career.

And while VanGorder is clearly very good at his job, it appears he has aspirations of moving up the coaching ladder, and this job at Philadelphia will help him achieve those goals.

It is also worth mentioning the irony in the Eagles adding another person with Georgia ties to their organization. Philly had a total of six Bulldog players on their roster this past season when they won the Super Bowl, so clearly adding as many Bulldogs as possible is working quite nicely for them. And with the resume VanGorder has already, this move will likely work out very well for them as well.

It’s unclear what Smart will do as a replacement for VanGorder, but it’s likely that he will hire from within to fill the role he had.
