Georgia being favored at Alabama is a historic line if it holds

The Alabama Crimson Tide have not been an underdog at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2007, Nick Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa, but Georgia is favored heading into Week 5.

The Georgia Bulldogs have only beaten the Alabama Crimson Tide once in their last nine tries, yet in Week 5 as No. 2 Georgia heads to Tuscaloosa to face No. 4 Alabama, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are the favorites.

With Nick Saban only in town for ESPN’s College Gameday and not on the sidelines Saturday, Alabama is a home underdog for the first time since 2007, Saban’s first year as Alabama’s head coach, when the Crimson Tide hosted No. 3 LSU on November 3. LSU handed Saban his third loss of that season, 41-34 and Alabama finished that season 7-6.

The last time that Alabama was an underdog of any kind was in Athens in 2015, two weeks removed from an upset loss to Ole Mis at home. That day, No. 13 Alabama beat Mark Richt and No. 8 Georgia 38-10. Alabama wouldn’t lose another game the rest of the way, claiming its fourth national championship of the Nick Saban era. Following the final win over Clemson, Saban’s defensive coordinator Kirby Smart began his tenure as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.

With DeBoer in charge in 2024, the Crimson Tide are a perfect 3-0 with wins over Western Kentucky, USF, and Wisconsin. After Alabama beat the Badgers 42-10 in Week 3, Smart’s Bulldogs narrowly escaped their SEC opener in Lexington with a 13-12 win over Kentucky.

That performance knocked Georgia out of the No. 1 spot in the AP poll where undefeated Texas now sits, but it wasn’t enough for the oddsmakers to stop believing in the Bulldogs. While the line has moved in Alabama’s direction some, Georgia is still favored. Here’s a look at the odds for Georgia/Alabama Week 5 from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
