Georgia Football is the number one program in college football. Many people would not argue that point with you as of right now. The Dawgs have been so dominant recently because of the talent on the roster. Top to bottom, Georgia has an embarrassment of riches. Four- and five-star players litter the roster, which shows up when they play on Saturdays.
But what many people overlook is the 3-stars or lower that make significant contributions to the team. It is not lost on Georgia fans that, while the Dawgs have been in the top 5 recruiting since Kirby Smart took over in 2016, they also have guys who were unknown during their recruitment that play a significant role.
J.D. PicKell for ON3 said that the Georgia Football program is "Development U". The clip is going viral on social media.
Pickell is 100% correct in asserting that Kirby Smart can develop talent. He used Ladd McConkey as an example of why the Dawgs are "Development U." While that is the more recent example of how Smart and his staff have taken an unknown to stardom, I think of many examples. My mind goes to the most prominent example: Stetson Bennett IV.
There are many players to point to where 3-stars are lower when they came to Athens and were developed into NFL talent. That is what Kirby Smart and his staff do; they develop players despite their star rankings coming out of high school.
The detractors will point to the recruiting rankings and say that the Dawgs are one of the best programs because of that. While that is part of the formula in Athens, it is only part of the story. Developing players is crucial to winning in today's college football world. Players can now leave whenever they want, which will be a trend for now.
With the player turnover, trying to develop players can be a challenge. Putting time into scouting and finding players often overlooked by other programs is the secret to Georgia's success.
