Georgia getting thin on the defensive line for Week 2 with concerning injury report

Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs should be fine without Mykel Williams and Warren Brinson in Week 2 against Tennessee Tech, but they need their star defensive linemen back for SEC play in Week 3.

Over Georgia’s 40-game regular season winning streak, the Bulldogs have been dominant in the trenches, but what has long been a strength could be reduced to a weakness by injuries. Last week, Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann’s defense was without Jordan Hall and Xzavier McLeod, and in the Week 2 home-opener, they will be even more short-handed.

Veteran defensive lineman Warren Brinson came into fall camp with an Achilles injury that limited him, but last week he left Georgia’s 34-3 win over Clemson with a different injury. Brinson suffered a new lower-body injury, and it is suspected that he was stepped on. Brinson is listed as doubtful against Tennessee Tech.

The Dawgs will also be without their best pass-rusher as Mykel Williams has been ruled out with an ankle injury that forced him to leave the game against Clemson. In Williams's absence, Jalon Walker will be forced to play more snaps as an edge rusher, and freshman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye will likely see an increased role. Sophomore Damon Wilson II could also be featured on the edge.

Here is Georgia’s full injury report for Week 2.

Georgia football Week 2 injury report:

  • Mykel Williams, DE: Out (Ankle)
  • Roderick Robinson II, RB: Out (Toe)
  • Jordan Hall, DT: Doubtful (Leg)
  • Warren Brinson, DT: Doubtful (Ankle/Lower Body)
  • Xzavier McLeod, DT: Doubtful (Abdominal)
  • Joenel Aguero, DB: Probable (Hamstring)
  • Trevor Etienne, RB: Likely

While there is bad news on defense, Georgia’s offense will be closer to full strength with the almost certain debut of Florida transfer Trevor Etienne who missed last week’s season opener after an offseason DUI arrest.
