Potential location of Georgia football’s first CFP game revealed
Georgia football still has five games left on their schedule (with the potential for a sixth if they make the SEC Championship game), but it’s never too early to look ahead to the College Football Playoffs. That’s the goal for this team anyways, right?
This year’s CFP is arguably more exciting than ever before as it is the first year 12 teams will participate. This includes the four highest-ranked conference champions who automatically earn the top four seeds.
This obviously is the goal for Kirby Smart’s team as not only would they earn a top seed if they win the SEC, but they would also earn a first round bye. But now there’s an added benefit to their CFP draw if they win the SEC.
Georgia to play in Allstate Sugar Bowl if they win the SEC
Brett McMurphy with Action Network HQ announced that the quarterfinal locations for the four power four conference champions have already been decided. The SEC champion (which hopefully will be Georgia) will play their quarterfinal CFP matchup at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
The purpose of this is so the top four seeds can play as close to home as possible in their first CFP game. And in Georgia’s case, this is a better location compared to two of the other quarterfinal locations in Arizona (Fiesta Bowl) and California (Rose Bowl). The fourth quarterfinal is the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, but New Orleans is close enough.
Obviously Georgia has a lot to accomplish for this news to even matter. The Bulldogs must win the SEC to guarantee they play in the Sugar Bowl, and as of now UGA doesn’t even control their own destiny to make it to the SEC Championship game.
If Georgia makes the playoffs without winning the SEC, there is no telling where their potential quarterfinal matchup would be. If they won their first round game, it all would depend on what seed they are and which power four champion they’re matchup up against in the quarterfinals. But Georgia would still have a 50 percent chance to play that game extremely close to home.
Hopefully at the end of the season Georgia is crowned champions of the SEC, that way all UGA fans can start planning their trip to New Orleans for the Bulldogs first CFP game on New Years Day.
