May college football fans and experts believe that there are a lot of concerns in Georgia’s quarterback room this season. Georgia football fans may not want to admit that, but there are many who are doubting Gunner Stockton heading into the season.
There is definitely a debate to be had about Stockton’s potential when it comes to becoming Georgia’s full time starter for the first time, but the large concern surrounding him seems unfair.
So while UGA fans wait to see how Stockton does under center, there will be a constant debate comparing him to other quarterbacks throughout the country. And the most recent debate took place on an Atlanta radio station, 680 The Fan, and host Matt Chernoff said that the Georgia Tech quarterback room is in a much better position than Georgia’s room.
”This is one of those instances as we sit here in June, a couple months out from the season, where the Georgia Tech quarterback situation is better than Georgia.”
Will Georgia Tech be better off at QB than Georgia?
The thought process behind this statement was quite simple. Georgia Tech will once again be starting Haynes King at QB who is entering his sixth season of college football. This includes three years where he played a significant amount of snaps as the starting QB.
So it’s clear to see why there would be more confidence in Haynes than Stockton, and while Georgia fans might not agree, the rationale is pretty fair.
However, what fellow host Chuck Oliver said next is what might upset a lot of Georgia fans, because he said there is no debate between which situation is better when looking at the quarterback and offensive coordinator combo at both schools.
“You just took the vote from a strong win for Haynes to a landslide. Adding the OC in there ends the debate.”
Oliver is claiming that there is no debate that King is in a better situation than Stockton when looking at both offensive coordinators for Georgia Tech and UGA. While some Georgia fans might agree with this as well after the poor season Mike Bobo had in 2024, Bobo has proven himself to be an elite coordinator in the past. So the fact anyone would think Georgia Tech would win this debate in a “landslide” is quite surprising.
Thankfully these two quarterbacks will get to battle it out in Atlanta this season to see who the better player is. And if the same trend from the last few decades remains true, then Stockton will likely outperform King all season long.
