Rams message after Stetson Bennett's first NFL action casts doubt on his future

Stetson Bennett waited his turn, just like he did at Georgia. He probably never knew if he was going to get a chance to play an NFL regular season game, which is a similar feeling he once faced while at Georgia.

On Thursday during the Rams' season opener in Australia though he was officially named the Rams backup quarterback over rookie Ty Simpson.

The Rams did not play great Thursday night and with the game out of reach they pulled starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and put Bennett in for the first time of his career with 3:29 to play. After a hand off in his first NFL snap Bennett took his second snap of the game where he ran up the middle for nine yards and a first down.

Bennett ultimately went two for three passing for 13 yards to go along with the nine yard rush.

Bennett was doubted from the moment the Rams drafted Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. NFL fans and analysts assumed this meant Simpson would be their backup this year, but Bennett did the same thing he did at Georgia and proved many people wrong and won the job.

Unfortunately for Bennett it doesn't sound like his role as the Rams backup is set in stone for the rest of season, according to head coach Sean McVay.

“I’ve talked to those guys about it and I don’t want to necessarily say that whatever we do in week one is how it stays throughout the year, but our job is to develop both of those guys,” McVay said via dawgnation.com. “Like I’ve told you, I feel really good about both of them.”

Stetson Bennett continued Georgia's recent success over Alabama

Bennett's role with the Rams is still up in the air, but for now he can celebrate winning the backup job in week one. He may not ultimately care about what this means in Georgia's rivalry against Alabama, but UGA fans will love the new talking point they now have.

Georgia got the last laugh over Alabama last season. The Tide did beat Georgia in Athens during the regular season last year, but Georgia got their revenge and won the more important game in the SEC Championship game. Alabama may still have the better overall record against Georgia in the Kirby Smart era, but Georgia currently has the bragging rights.

Stetson Bennett found similar success against Alabama during his college career. He lost to the Tide in the 2021 SEC Championship game the first time he played them, but one month later he beat them in the national championship game. He then led Georgia to a perfect 15-0 season in 2022 that ended with another national title that cemented himself as a legend in Athens forever.

Bennett once again got the upper hand over Alabama in the NFL after he beat out the Tide's coveted first round pick for the backup job in LA. It's unclear what the future may hold for him for the rest of this season and beyond, but for now he gave Georgia fans another reason to flex on Alabama.
