Stetson Bennett has made the Rams’ 53-man roster for the upcoming season. That was never really in doubt, but if he’ll be No. 2 or No. 3 on their depth chart is what fans have been waiting to find out.
The Rams training camp and preseason games are in the books and they are only nine days away from their first regular season game. They however haven’t decided if Stetson Bennett or Ty Simpson is their backup, and every day that passes shows how uncertain Bennett’s future in LA is.
Rams still can’t decide who their backup quarterback will be
Both Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson performed well throughout training camp. Bennett was getting the nod over Simpson during practice by taking reps before him, and he also started the two preseason games he played in. Simpson however was one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL throughout the preseason, and his performances have made it difficult for the Rams to decide who their backup QB will be.
Bennett was no slouch when he played in the preseason though. He specifically shined in the Rams’ second game when he was efficient throwing the ball while running for two touchdowns.
Both players would be good options to be the Rams’ backup this season, but they can only choose one. The Rams will have to make a decision before their first game on Sept. 10, but regardless of what they do Bennett’s future with the Rams could be ending after this season.
Rams indecisiveness on who their backup quarterback will be is bad news for Stetson Bennett’s future
Bennett’s contract with the Rams is up after this season. They could resign him again, but after drafting Simpson in the first round it seemed unlikely they would do that. After watching Simpson play well in the preseason it now seems even more unlikely that they’ll resign Bennett next offseason.
The fact that the Rams are struggling to announce a backup shows how much trust they already have in Simpson. Bennett may still have the advantage over Simpson due to his experience with the Rams, but if Simpson is already close to surpassing Bennett on the depth chart the Rams will probably be ready to have him be their full time backup next season.
That means Bennett will have to sign a contract with a new team next year, and since he has zero experience in a regular season game it could be difficult for him to get signed let alone signed by a team who needs a new starter.
Regardless of who the Rams name as their backup it seems like after this year they’ll be ready to ride with Simpson over Bennett. Things can obviously change between now and next offseason, but Bennett most likely will be looking for a new team next year.
That could be the best thing for him since the Rams have never wanted Bennett to be their starter, but the uncertainty of his future is worrisome to say the least.
