Many college football fans across the country believe Georgia's NIL strategy is outdated. Kirby Smart chooses to spend most of his money on retaining his roster instead of buying new transfers every year, and that is something that schools like Texas just can't wrap their head around.
Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson however just proved why their NIL strategy is much better than how schools like Texas handle their NIL money.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian admitted that he pushed some of his players to leave this offseason so he could pay a lot of money for new transfers. This likely will create a lot of locker room tension as players compare the money they make to their teammates, but Wilson proved that this jealousy does not exist at Georgia.
Raylen Wilson just showed why Texas' NIL strategy is all wrong
Kirby Smart's NIL strategy at Georgia is simple. He will not overpay for recruits or transfers but instead he waits to reward the players already at Georgia that prove how great they are for the program.
This makes it impossible for their to be any NIL jealousy in the locker room because every player in the program witnesses a player earn their large NIL deals. On top of that, no one at Georgia will ever see someone in their first year with the program make more money than they guys who have been there for a few years already.
That does not exist at Texas. Steve Sarkisian doesn't care how NIL might impact the Longhorns' locker room. Instead he tries to buy as many players as he can without a care in the world how it will impact the guys already in his program. He is proving that he has no loyalty to the guys he coaches, and that is something Smart just does not stand for.
People can debate which strategy they would prefer their team to follow, but the results on the field make it pretty clear which has been more effective up to this point.
Raylen Wilson proved that he is the best leader possible for Georgia
Wilson will most likely be one of Georgia's captains this season. He was one of just three players that joined Smart at SEC Media Days last week, so that typically is a sign for who will be the Bulldogs' leaders during the upcoming season.
Wilson will be expected to make big plays on the field all season long. Beyond that though he will also be expected to lead the entire defense verbally and with his actions as well. This statement will go a long way for the program because it will tell all of the underclassmen that no one should care how much NIL money anyone is making.
The only thing that matters is winning. All that matters is getting better every day. NIL checks won't buy a team a championship, it's the guys in the locker room that have to go out and earn it.
That is the difference between a program like Georgia who has won more than any other program in the NIL era and a program like Texas who just can't get over the hump.
