Ohio State is one of Georgia’s biggest competitors outside of the SEC. Not only are the Buckeyes a threat in the College Football Playoff each season, but they regularly battle Georgia on the recruiting trail as well.
Head coach Ryan Day recently spoke about what recruits they like to target at Ohio State. He unsurprisingly said they’re looking to recruit the best players in the country, but the way he worded it could indirectly help Georgia be much more successful recruiting against them going forward.
NEW: Ohio State has STRICT recruiting standards:

Ryan Day’s recruiting blunder could help Georgia for years to come
The point Day is attempting to make is clear. He is saying that he only wants the best players to come to Ohio State, and if anyone doesn’t have aspirations of becoming a top NFL Draft pick (or doesn’t think they’re good enough to become that) then they shouldn’t come to OSU.
While that is what he’s trying to say, the college football world is receiving his message a little differently. College football fans are taking this as an admission that Day doesn’t think he’s capable of developing players into NFL level prospects. So why would anyone want to go to Ohio State if that’s the case?
Kirby Smart isn’t afraid of developing anyone at Georgia. In fact, that is what he has been the best at over his 10 years in Athens. So while Day might be a little afraid of having to develop players, that is what Smart looks forward to doing the most.
How will this impact recruiting? This won’t really change anything when it comes to the best of the best in any recruiting class, but it could impact recruit’s decisions that are further down the rankings. Just because a recruit is ranked low doesn’t mean they can’t become an NFL player, and every year there are countless examples of of low level recruits becoming a first round pick.
Those recruits might not want to play for Ohio State anymore, but if Smart sees potential in then then he’ll be more than happy to take them at Georgia.
