Money. It seems like that’s the only thing people want to talk about nowadays in college football. Who has the most NIL? Which players are getting paid the most? How much does it cost to go to a game? All of these topics seemingly get discussed on a daily basis, especially on social media.
There are so many other things that go into running a successful college football program, but nowadays everything is centered around money. This conversation however will likely continue for the rest of time, and that included the SEC revenue share that was just announced for the 23-24 fiscal year.
Georgia got much richer thanks to the SEC revenue share
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced on Thursday how much money each SEC institution will make for the 23-24 fiscal year that ended Aug. 31, 2024. The total amount allocated that will be evenly distributed to each SEC athletic department that was part of the conference for this entire fiscal year totals a whopping $808.4 million. This total includes money from television deals, the College Football Playoff, other postseason bowl games, the SEC Championship game and the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
This money gets spread out evenly amongst every SEC program that was part of the conference the entire year, so the total comes out to $52.5 million for Georgia and every other school.
It’s important to note that this total is not just for the Georgia football program. Sure the football program brings in a majority of this revenue, but this money goes to the athletic department and will be used for every athletic program at Georgia.
Last year’s revenue share totaled $741 million, so the SEC saw a large increase in revenue this past year. That growth likely will continue considering Oklahoma and Texas are still brands new additions to the conference. So the SEC and Georgia likely will remain at the top of the college athletics world for many years to come.
