Two weeks ago Georgia defeated Auburn on the road 20-10. The Tigers started this game as hot as any team possibly could as they took an early 10-0 lead. But that is when disaster struck for Auburn in what many fans believe was a critical mistake by the officials.

Auburn had the ball on the one yard line with about two minutes to play in the first half. The Tigers lined up for a QB sneak and quarterback Jackson Arnold dove over the his linemen for the end zone, but that is when Georgia punched the ball out and recovered the fumble.

The refs ruled that the play was a fumble recovered by Georgia. This play was then reviewed for what felt like hours before ultimately being upheld as the replay booth ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. But fans throughout the country were confident they got it wrong.

This wasn’t the only controversial moment from this game, but it’s the one that everyone is still talking about to this day.

Most people assumed this is where the story would end, but that is not the case as the SEC announced they have permanently suspended an official from this game.

SEC suspends official from Georgia vs Auburn game

Officials make mistakes in every game in every sport, that is just what comes with playing competitive sports. But there are rare occurrences where the officials do such a bad job that they are suspended, and that is what has occurred with this official from Georgia's matchup with Auburn.

Normally if an official is suspended is just for a few games and they are back in action, but the SEC was more harsh than that. The SEC decided to permanently suspend this official because they felt he did that bad of a job.

SEC fans have felt that the officials have been noticeably worse this season, so this decision might be an effort for the conference to crack down on the poor season their refs are having. Either way, the conference is finally attempting to police their officials which should make games better officiated moving forward.

It will be interesting to see if this decision has an impact on the officiating the rest of this season, but the SEC is at least attempting to make their officials be better which is nice to see.
