Georgia had high expectations for wide receiver Zachariah Branch when he transferred in from USC this past offseason. And so far he has exceeded every expectation set before him.
While at USC he was a very good player, but he did not have a true breakout season like one would expect from the No. 5 overall player in the country. But upon his arrival to Georgia he immediately showed why he was such a sought after recruit out of high school as he is now just four receptions away from setting a program record.
Zachariah Branch could set new program record in Georgia's first CFP game
Brice Hunter has held the program record for the most receptions in a single season since 1993. His 76 receptions have stood the test of time as no Bulldog has even come close to surpassing his total. That record however more than likely will fall thanks to the heroic season from Branch.
Branch currently sits at 73 receptions this season. That means he only needs four more receptions to set the program record at Georgia for most receptions in a single season.
Branch is only guaranteed one more game this year, but that should be enough for him to set this record. Through 13 games this season he has recorded at least four receptions 10 times which includes hauling in at least four passes in each of Georgia's last nine games.
Branch will have his chance to set this record on Jan. 1 either against Tulane or Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. The Rebels are the most likely team to advance to face Georgia, and it just so happens that Branch recorded eight receptions against Ole Miss earlier this season.
Either way Branch has a great chance to make history and break the single season receptions record that has stood for the last three decades. And who knows, he is even creeping up on Terrence Edwards' single season receiving yards record as well.
