Texas will always be a big problem for Georgia. Sure they haven’t been able to beat Georgia since joining the SEC, but they will always have a roster capable of taking the Bulldogs down.

That thankfully hasn’t happened yet, but head coach Steve Sarkisian is doing everything in his power to accomplish that. And that includes copying Kirby Smart’s strategy with his coaching staff.

Steve Sarkisian is copying Kirby Smart by hiring Mark Stoops

Smart has made his living off adding former head coaches to his coaching staff. Even if they weren’t successful as a head coach, having as many people with that experience underneath him has worked wonders.

Think of coaches like Todd Monken and Will Muschamp. They both had experience as head coaches before becoming assistants under Smart, and hiring them turned out to be one of the best things Smart has done as Georgia won both of their national titles when they were in town.

Sarkisian must’ve been paying attention because this offseason he has done the same thing at Texas. He started by stealing Muschamp from Georgia’s staff and he has now hired Mark Stoops as well.

Was this a calculated decision from Sarkisian? Did he do this because he saw Smart have as much success as a program can have by making these same types of hires? It’s hard not to think that he got this idea from Smart, especially because he took Muschamp from him.

It will be intriguing to see how these hires work out for Sarkisian. It’s clear that it has worked out perfectly at Georgia, but there’s no guarantee that it will at Texas. Up to this point Sarkisian has shown he isn’t as good of a coach as Smart is, so that could be the difference in Texas winning it all or falling short like every other year.

But if Texas does finally win a championship it in some part will have to do with these hires.
