Steve Spurrier takes an unnecessary shot at Stetson Bennett

Stetson Bennett will arguably be remembered as the greatest quarterback in Georgia football history. He helped lead the Bulldogs to their two National Championships in 2021 and 2022, and leading a team to two national titles in a row is something no QB has been capble of doing in the modern era of college football.

Bennett however isn't the only reason Georgia won these titles. UGA's elite defense also played a huge part in these championships with some believing they played a bigger role than Bennett did.

But most would agree that everyone on these Georgia teams contributed greatly to their success. One person however who does not agree that Bennett played a big role in these championships is former SEC head coach Steve Spurrier.

“I think there’s two areas that are, probably, going to determine the best teams,” Spurrier shared via si.com. “Obviously, coaching is important. And then special players. It could be the quarterback but it could be other guys. Georgia won two national championships with Stetson Bennett. So, the quarterback, he needs to be a good player but he doesn’t have to be one of those guys that has to throw for 300 yards every game.”

Stetson Bennett deserves more respect from Steve Spurrier

Most Georgia fans would probably want to give Bennett the most credit for their two National Championships, but no one would deny that it was a team effort. But according to Spurrier, anyone could have been Georgia's QB and they still would have won both championships.

That is where Georgia fans will draw the line, because Bennett did things that not every quarterback could have done for UGA during those two National Championship runs. Bennett was the perfect leader that those teams needed, and he was also able to make the perfect play at the exact moment Georgia needed him to whether it be through the air or on the ground with his legs.

Sure there were other quarterbacks out there who could have also led Georgia to these championships as well, but that list is very small. So this statement from Spurrier is extremely disrespectful as he somehow already forgot all the great things Bennett did for Georgia during those seasons.
