Thursday was a big day for Georgia football as they lost a key member of their coaching staff. Will Muschamp, who has been a member of Georgia's coaching staff since 2021, was announced as the new Defensive Coordinator for the Texas Longhorns.

Muschamp was a co-Defensive Coordinator for Georgia during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but for the last two years he was an off the field analyst on Kirby Smart's staff. So when Texas came calling looking for a new Defensive Coordinator, Muschamp couldn't pass up that opportunity.

Texas made a pitch that Will Muschamp couldn't refuse

The exact details of Muschamp's contract have not been released yet, but Georgia insider Graham Coffey has some information he shared online. Coffey didn't say what number he heard for Muschamp's salary, but if what he heard is true then he would be the highest paid coordinator in all of college football.

So not only was he no longer a Deensive Coordinator for Georgia, but he also was not making this kind of money. Muschamp was only making $600,000 in his current role at Georgia, and if what Coffey said is true he will be making much more than that at Texas.

Even though Muschamp was only in an off the field role for Georgia, he made a huge impact on the team. Muschamp was never that good of a head coach at Florida and South Carolina, but he has been a very strong assistant his entire career. Georgia got a taste of that for two years when he was their Defensive Coordinator, so they know just how good he is in that role.

Texas is going to get a lot better because of this hire, but there is no reason for Georgia to panic. Smart is one of the beat head coaches in all of college football, and after beating Texas three times in a row there is no hire the Longhorns can make to overcome that.
