The College Football Playoff committee owes Georgia a National Championship

If only things never changed.

The College Football Playoff has been around since 2014, and during that time college football has dramatically changed. The sport has changed so much that some fans wish the CFP never began and the sport still used the old Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system to determine the National Champion.

The BCS was retired in 2014 when the CFP took over, but all of the controversy surrounding the CFP committee makes some college football fans wish a more computer based system like the BCS was still in control. So what would have happened last season if the BCS still controlled who got to play for a National Championship?

The Georgia Bulldogs more than likely would have ended up winning the National Championship.

Georgia would have won the National Championship if the BCS still existed

The above post shows what the final BCS standings would have been at the end of last season compared to the final CFP rankings. Oregon and Georgia would have still been the top two teams in the BCS standings like they were in the CFP standings, so Georgia would have faced Oregon with the National Championship on the line.

It by no means is a given that UGA would have won this game, especially because they still would have had to rely on their backup QB in Gunner Stockton, but Georgia would have stood a very good chance at coming out on top. Sure the Ducks would have been 13-0 entering this matchup, but everyone saw how that worked out in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State last season in the CFP quarterfinals.

The Buckeyes jumped out to a shocking 34-0 lead before coasting to a 41-21 victory. Based on this game alone, Georgia would probably feel pretty good about being able to beat the Ducks even with Stockton under center.

Unfortunately this is not the reality of what happened, so Kirby Smart and Georgia will have to settle for their SEC Championship and early CFP exit last year. But it's hard as a Georgia fan to not sit and wonder what could have been had the College Football Playoff never replaced the BCS.
