Gunner Stockton may not be the favorite to win this year's Heisman Trophy, but he is closer to getting to New York than most people realize. After the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, Stockton's Georgia Bulldogs are ranked where they should be at No. 5 overall. Yes, they probably want to avoid a rematch with the Alabama Crimson Tide in the quarterfinals, but the Dawgs have time.
The only teams ranked ahead of Georgia are Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M and Alabama, all of whom have Heisman Trophy contenders at quarterback. Anyone with a pulse right now would have Julian Sayin, Fernando Mendoza, Marcel Reed and Ty Simpson ranked somewhere in the top five in the Heisman Trophy race without much argument. One should argue for Stockton to be at No. 5. ..
Here are the latest Heisman Trophy odds from FanDuel Sportsbook heading into the Week 11 slate.
- Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin: +150
- Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza: +250
- Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson: +380
- Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed: +650
- Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton: +2500
- Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith: +4000
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love: +4000
- Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia: +4000
- Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss: +4000
- Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore: +5500
- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King: +5500
While Stockton easily has the fifth-best odds at winning the Heisman, where is he in On3's poll?

Trinidad Chambliss, Haynes King, Diego Pavia and Dante Moore all being ahead of Stockton is awful...
Gunner Stockton is a far better Heisman candidate than people realize
Through his first eight games of the season, Stockton has led Georgia to a 7-1 record and 5-1 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs have two wins over ranked teams in No. 25 Tennessee and No. 6 Ole Miss. Their lone loss is to No. 4 Alabama at home by three points. If Stockton completed one, maybe two more passes, Georgia would be undefeated and he would be the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
So far this year, Stockton has completed 70.3 percent of his passes for a very American 1,776 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. As a runner, he has 71 carries for 290 yards and seven touchdowns. If he really wanted to run up the score on Florida, he could have had 291 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. The guy is arguably the best dual-threat quarterback in the country right now!
Of the six guys On3 has grossly ranked ahead of him, let's only pile on the quarterbacks. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love is excellent and should win the Doak Walker. Similar things apply to Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, as he should win the Biletnikoff. The issues with having Chambliss, King, Pavia and Moore being ahead of Stockton are as absurd as the lame graphic itself.
Chambliss and Pavia have been sensational in SEC play this season. While Ole Miss is approaching lock territory in the College Football Playoff, Georgia beat Ole Miss head-to-head with Stockton out-dueling Chambliss. With no games left to boost Ole Miss' resume, him getting to New York would be of the empty-calorie nonsense variety that is not what the Heisman Trophy is about, nor should be it.
Pavia is one of the most fun players in recent college football history. Yes, winning big at Vanderbilt is not the same as winning big at Georgia. However, Pavia does not have the stats of other contenders. Furthermore, he has not played well in a handful of games this season. The underdog narrative, combined with the larger-than-life personality is doing him more service than the humble Stockton.
And for King and Moore, have you seen who Georgia Tech and Oregon have played this season? Georgia Tech is ranked 17th because of its lackluster schedule. The loss to North Carolina State has the Yellow Jackets on the verge of missing the playoff. They have to win out, and beat Georgia. As for Oregon, the Ducks' best win is over 5-3 Northwestern. They beat up on cupcakes, but lost to Indiana.
Stockton is not the favorite to win the Heisman, but the betting odds say he is a serious contender.
