With an extra week to get ready, the Florida Gators saw enough and decided to move on from Billy Napier as head coach. He went a combined 22-23 over the course of three-and-a-half seasons. While he did lead the Gators to a few bowl games, he failed to escape the unfortunate nickname of his being that of Sun Belt Billy. Florida will be facing is biggest SEC rival in Georgia in The Cocktail Party.
Replacing Napier will be Billy Gonzales as the interim. He will be the sixth interim head coach Florida has had in the last 36-plus years. Furthermore, Florida will be looking to hire its fifth full-time head coach since Urban Meyer abruptly retired on them in 2010. In the 15 years since Florida saw Meyer walk out the door, Georgia has had two head coaches: Mark Richt up until 2015 and Kirby Smart now.
Dayne Young of UGASports.com shared over X that "Georgia has had five head coaches since 1964."

Since Vince Dooley took over in Athens in 1964, Georgia had has five head coaches to Florida's 11...
Georgia is far better at hiring head coaches than Florida ever has been
Let's be fair here. Since 1960, Florida has employed three head coaches who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, while Georgia has had four. Ray Graves, Doug Dickey and Steve Spurrier represent Florida. Wally Butts, Vince Dooley, Jim Donnan and Mark Richt represent Georgia. Urban Meyer and Kirby Smart will give their respective schools one more hall-of-fame head coach.
The big key here is Georgia almost always gets it right, where as Florida hires a bunch of Ron Zooks. Donnan is mostly a hall of fame coach, based on his tremendous run at Marshall before coming to Athens. The only whiff Georgia has had at head coach since Dooley took over in 1964 was his former quarterback in Ray Goff. That would be just like Georgia hiring Mike Bobo to be its next head coach...
In the end, Georgia just does a better job of giving its head coaches runway than does Florida. The Gators have historically been too quick to the trigger. While Graves and Dickey were fine head coaches, Spurrier and Meyer were outstanding. Florida is clearly a program that has been elevated by two iconic coaches in the last 35 years, whereas Georgia has far more sustainable winning tradition.
If Florida hires its next Spurrier or Meyer, then good for them, but that is not likely to happen in 2026.
