For all the talk about Georgia’s pass rush being subpar in 2025, Zayden Walker was one young player who really impressed near the end of the season.
Then-true freshman Zayden Walker, a five-star recruit who was initially an off-ball linebacker, was moved to the edge as the Bulldogs tried to generate some juice any way they could.
He responded by delivering sacks in Georgia’s November win over Texas and SEC championship victory over Alabama, two of the Bulldogs’ biggest games of the year. Though it wasn’t the biggest sample size, Walker provided meaningful pass rush production at a time where Georgia needed it most.
“I like his work ethic,” head coach Kirby Smart said of Walker after a November win over Mississippi State last year. “If he continues to grow, he’s like one of these planes taking off. He’s starting to elevate. He’s starting to get better, and where can it go? He’s got a high ceiling if he continues to work hard.”

Walker is listed at 6-foot-1, 225 pounds on the team’s website. He’s a freak athlete with exceptional burst, power and foot speed. His pass rush technique is obviously still a bit raw due to his age, but he has the athletic tools to become a fearsome rusher.
Walker is probably an off-ball linebacker in the long term and played that position in high school, but Georgia identified the need for more edge rushing help last season and deployed him there.
He’s been compared to Jalon Walker for his versatility and pass rush skills. The last name doesn't hurt either.
Shoulder surgery for a torn labrum kept Walker out for most of Georgia’s spring schedule, but he should be a full-go for fall camp.
“Zayden had a shoulder repair, very typical of spring practices,” Smart said of Walker after Georgia’s spring game. “He’s going through that and he’s worked hard to get in shape, get back.
It’s tough to miss critical spring reps entering your second year in the program. But Walker has the talent to make up for the lost time. He feels like one of Georgia's highest-ceiling players on defense.
Georgia’s top two edge rushers this season will likely be returning starters Gabe Harris and Quintavius Johnson who are solid run defenders but aren’t premier pass rushers. Young edge rushers Chase Linton, Isaiah Gibson and Darren Ikinnagbon could be in for increased roles in their second years.
If Georgia wants to ease Walker back into the fold, the plan could be to initially deploy him as a third-down pass rusher to simplify his role in the defense. Then, it can gradually increase his off-ball reps at his more natural position.
Even in that relatively limited role, Walker could still deliver productio just as he did last year. He shouldn’t be overlooked as a potential X-factor on Georgia’s defense in 2026. The Bulldogs’ pass rush will need to be more disruptive if they want to defend their SEC title and make their first deep College Football Playoff run in a few years.
