Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, now leading the Miami Hurricanes, has been in the frontrunner group for the Heisman Trophy the last couple of weeks. But after Miami plays Florida State next week, Beck is likely to slide down that list.
Pundits are making a big deal out of Beck's nearly 1,000 passing yardage and 73 percent completion rate. But they are overlooking how many interceptions he's thrown. His interception to touchdown ratio is 43 percent which is not Heisman-level greatness. And he's getting ready to face a stout Seminole defense which has racked up 5.5 sacks, 20 tackles for loss and three interceptions already this season.
Florida State will expose Carson Beck.
The bad habits that plagued his last year at Georgia will begin to be more apparent now that Beck faces stiffer competition in ACC play. Florida State will pressure Beck, which means hurried passes, off-target throws, and at least a couple of interceptions for the Seminoles.
Georgia fans may need to keep a side eye on Miami's matchup with Florida State next week just to see if the disappointing performances of Beck for the Bulldogs last season follows him to South Beach. Folks from Athens may be too focused on Georgia's playoff hopes to care much about Beck and the Heisman, but if Beck has a poor showing it provides ample room for Gunner Stockton to rise in the Heisman race.
It's a long season with so many stats to gather between now and the end of November, but Georgia fans will have smiles on their faces the further Beck drops out of contention for the Heisman or any other award. His calculated transfer to Miami snubbed Georgia in favor of NIL riches, and time will tell if Beck made a good decision and whether it pays off in awards or a playoff run for the Hurricanes.
