Georgia was at the top of the college football world not long ago. Just three years ago the Bulldogs won their second National Championship in a row and it looked like nothing could slow them down.
But then the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams, and all the success Georgia was finding immediately went away.
12-team CFP has proven to be the worst thing for Georgia
Many Georgia fans thought the playoff expanding to 12 teams would be a really good thing for them. There aren't many seasons that end with Georgia outside of the top 12, so the expanded playoff almost guaranteed that UGA would make the CFP every season.
And while Georgia has made the CFP every season since it expanded, they have found no success.
Georgia has earned a first round bye in both years of the expanded playoff. They however have not managed to win a game yet as they were bounced out of the playoff in the quarterfinals both years. This includes their loss to Notre Dame last season and their defeat at the hands of Ole Miss last week.
To make matters even worse, teams that historically would not have had a chance to play for a national title are the ones winning it all. 8-seed Ohio State won it all last season and 10-seed Miami clinched their spot in the National Championship game Thursday night. So the expanded playoff has proven to be much more competitive than the 4-team playoff which makes winning a title that much more difficult.
Next year is a new year though so maybe Georgia will finally be able to win a playoff game under the new format. But so far the expanded playoff has proven to be disastrous for Georgia even though everyone thought it would be a really good thing.
