The SEC Championship race is beginning to heat up as there are just five weeks left of the regular season. Georgia is in position to make a run at yet another title, but they may not be the frontrunner they are used to being.

When looking at the SEC standings, there are four teams that clearly present the biggest challenge to Georgia repeating as SEC Champions. Two of those teams though stand a much better chance than everyone else, so here is how the top of the conference looks right now with five more weeks of football to play.

Frontrunners

As of October 27, there are only two frontrunners in the SEC. Alabama and Texas A&M are the two teams still undefeated, and since they are the only teams that control their own destiny they belong in this category alone.

Georgia is definitely good enough to compete with both teams and be in this category as well, but they don’t get to claim they are a frontrunner until they are in position to make the SEC Championship game.

Contenders

While Alabama and A&M are the only frontrunners in the SEC, there are three teams who still have a great chance to win the conference. Those teams are Georgia, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

All theee teams only have one loss and are a top 10 team in the country, but they do need some help just to make it to the SEC Championship game. But if they do get a little help, they are more than capable of winning an SEC title.

Season destroyers

The winner of the SEC more than likely will come from that group of five, but there are a few other really good teams in the SEC that can play spoiler and take down any of those five teams along the way.

Texas still only has one conference loss this season as well, but they aren’t playing at a high enough level to feel confident they can win the SEC. They can however beat any of the teams left on their schedule and impact the SEC title chase that way.

Tennessee, Missouri and Oklahoma are also part of this group that no longer can win the SEC, but they can have fun ruining some seasons as well. These teams, along with Texas, can all still make the College Football Playoff as well, so they still have a lot to play for even if they can’t win the conference.

The final five weeks of the regular season are going to be one for the history books. There is still so much uncertainty and so many big games that it’s impossible to know how the season will end. But one thing is certain, the winner of the SEC will have earned it and will be in a great position to make a run in the College Football Playoff.
