In a bye week, Georgia football fans need to be cheering for only one team today, and three the rest of the season. "Geaux Tigers" needs to echo loud throughout Athens as LSU faces Texas A&M Saturday. Why does this game matter so much? As it stands today, the Aggies stand in the way of Georgia getting to the SEC Championship game.
A win by the TIgers on Saturday though will even up Texas A&M and Georgia with one conference loss each. Then Bulldog fans can continue to support LSU when they face Alabama in a few weeks. After that, Georgia fans need to hope at least one of three teams defeats the Aggies.
Tigers, Gameccocks, and Longhorns, Oh My!
After LSU today, the Aggis face the Midwestern Tigers of Missouri, then South Carolina, and end the season with Texas. Georgia needs the Aggies to get one more conference loss in order to slide in to the Atlanta showdown with Alabama, who have the head-to-head win over Georgia.
In order for Kirby Smart to have a shot at his fourth SEC Championship, Georgia fans may need to grit their teeth and cheer on a few other SEC rivals. Of course, any team beating Alabama the rest of the season would give Georgia a tremendous boost.
Of course, Georgia has to win their remaining SEC games against Florida, Texas, and Mississippi State, all of which are possible if they will actually play to win for all four quarters instead of relying on "adjustments" at halftime to pull out a win each game. Even though it's not a conference game, a win over Georgia Tech in Mercedes Benz Stadium after Thanksgiving gives the mojo to sweep into Atlanta and roll into another SEC trophy presentation.
Georgia's destiny is not in its own hands, which makes fans nervous. Who likes to depend on other teams beating a rival to get your team into a championship? But, given their poor performance against the Crimson Tide, Georgia backed themselves into this corner. But there are a lot of ways for Georgia to get out of that corner, and that begins with LSU beating Texas A&M.
