No. 4 – Taylor Maxey and Quayvon Hicks are getting the job done at fullback

When starting fullback Merritt Hall was medically disqualified due to continued concussions, the Bulldogs were forced into trying to fill the spot just before the season was ready to begin.

The coaches wanted to avoid moving Quayvon Hicks back to a full-time fullback spot because he had spent the offseason working diligently at learning the position of tight end and wing back.

Fortunately for Hicks, he’s only been pressed into duty a few times at fullback, because senior walk-on Taylor Maxey has stepped in and made a number of crucial plays.

Maxey is still learning and hasn’t had a lot of snaps at fullback, but he’s looked quite comfortable on the field and had a hand in opening up some huge holes for Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb in the win over Clemson.

“He’s a guy who wasn’t afraid to hit somebody,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re always looking for those guys. He’s been kind of learning the position for two years and then the opportunity presented itself when Merritt had to be DQ’d and Quayvon having to play some tight end. He’s done a nice job and I expect him to continue to do that the whole year.”
