The Georgia Bulldogs are getting ready to travel to Auburn for their final regular season game, but guard Kenny Gaines may not be available.
This isn’t the news Bulldog hoops fans wanted just as the season is closing and the Dawgs are getting ready to gear up for the SEC Tournament.
But according to Athens Banner-Herald reporter Marc Weiszer, guard Kenny Gaines has a sprained foot, and is listed as day-to-day on the team’s official injury report. Gaines injured the foot in practice on Thursday.
Gaines is undoubtedly one of the team leaders and key players, sitting second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game, and third on the team with 1.7 assists per game. He leadership and fire on the court are also intangibles that the Bulldogs will miss if Gaines has to sit out any significant amount of time.
The good news is that he’s on that “day-to-day” list, meaning he hasn’t been scratched or ruled out yet, but the injury is significant enough that he possibly may have to be.

The upcoming game against Auburn isn’t necessarily crucial, and if there’s a game that the Dawgs can afford to be without Gaines’ services, it would be that one. Win or lose, the Bulldogs are likely in the NCAA Tournament, and really can’t do much to improve their seeding in the SEC Tournament.
But once the conference tourney gets rolling next week, Georgia will need a healthy Gaines if they want to advance and try and exact a little revenge on Kentucky.
