No History

Georgia and Missouri have played football against each other four times. The first contest came in the 1960 Orange Bowl. For Bulldogs, the game is notable not for the opponent. It was Wally Butts last game prowling the Bulldogs sidelines as head coach.

The star was Georgia quarterback Fran Tarkenton, who threw for two touchdowns on broken plays and completed nine-of-16 passes for 131 yards. Both touchdowns came in the first half. The Georgia defense halted potential scoring drives three times with interceptions and the Dawgs overcame a 264-to-223 yardage deficit to the Tigers.

In fact, there is a soft spot in the Bulldog’s heart for then Missouri Head Coach, Dan Devine. Devine coached Notre Dame in the “Rudy Game” as Notre Dame ran up the score on Georgia Tech the same day Richard Appleby threw 80 yards to Gene Washington to lift Georgia over Florida. Five years later, Devine was the Notre Dame Coach in the 1981 Sugar Bowl as Georgia claimed its National Championship.
