Former Georgia Baseball Players Chase “The Show”

Dawn of the Dawg updates the former Georgia baseball players chasing their major league dream.

Former Diamond Dawgs are chasing the dream this summer and several moved a step closer to “The Show” during the month of July.

Hunter Cole is in an outfielder for the Richmond , Va, Flying Squirrels after moving up two levels this year in Double-A. He is batting .272 with five doubles, two triples, one home run and six RBI in 22 games following his latest promotion. He began the year with Augusta , GA in the Class A South Atlantic League where he batted .275 with five RBIs in 10 games, was promoted to San Jose in the Advanced-A California League, and hit .313 with six homers and 37 RBIs in 54 games. Cole was a Diamond Dawg from 2012 – 2014.

Zach Cone is an outfielder for the  Frisco (Texas) Rough Riders in the Texas League after a promotion from Double A. He is batting .143 with four RBI in 10 games. He opened the season in Class A-Advanced with the High Desert Mavericks and batted .286 with 16 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs and 51 RBI in 73 games. Cone played for the Dawgs in 2009-11.

Kyle Farmer is catching for the Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League. He is batting .296 with a homer and 13 doubles with 18 RBIs in 33 games following a call up from the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Advanced-A California League where he batted .337-1-27 with 14 doubles and six triples in 44 games. Farmer also played for the winning U.S. Team in the All-Star Futures Game on July 12th at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park. Farmer’s years are Georgia were 2010-13

Levi Hyams plays infield for the Mississippi Braves and is batting .274 with five doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBI in 36 games since his promotion from the Carolina Mudcats of the Advanced-A Carolina League. He appeared in 34 games and batted .221 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and eight RBI for the Mudcats. Hyams was a Diamond Dawg from 2009-12

Jeff Walters successfully completed a rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League and is now pitching for the Class A-Advanced St. Lucie of the Florida State League. The Right-handed pitcher is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and two saves on six innings with one walk and nine strikeouts. Walters had been out since the summer of 2014 due to elbow surgery. Walters was a Bulldog from 2009-10

Nelson Ward has advanced to the Class A-Advanced Bakerfields Blaze of the California League. The infielder is batting .249 with eight doubles, two triples, three home runs and 16 RBI in 42 games since the promotion from Clinton (Iowa) in the Class A Midwest League where he batted .270-2-16 in 46 games. Ward played for Georgia from 2012-14.

Curt Powell is an Infielder for the Lakeland (Fla.) Flying Tigers. He is batting .319 with seven doubles, two triples and 13 RBI in 40 games. Powell played 26 games this season in Double-A for the Erie Sea Wolves of the Eastern League and batted .241with two RBIs before being placed n the disabled list and then returning to Lakeland. Powell’s Diamond Dawg years were 2011-13

Jarrett Brown, Georgia 2012-14, is a relief pitcher for the Class A Clinton (Iowa) Lumber Kings. He is 1-4 record with a 4.63 ERA and a save in 28 games including three starts. He has pitched 56.1 innings pitched with 29 walks and 44 strikeouts. Brown played for Georgia from 2012-2014.

Jared Cheek, Georgia 2014-15, is a relief pitcher for the Class A-Short Season Eugene (Ore.) Emeralds. Cheek appeared in six games, all in relief, and is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and two saves in 7.0 innings with five walks and five strikeouts. Cheel’s Diamond Dawg years were 2014-15

Taylor Hicks debuted with the GCL Tigers in Rookie Ball and after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, was promoted to the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Class A Midwest League. After another appearance, he was assigned to Connecticut where he is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four games covering five innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Hicks played for Georgia from 2011-12, ’14-15

Cecil Tanner is a relief pitcher for the Lake Elsinore (Calif.) Storm and is 0-0 with a 9.82 ERA in four appearances . Tanner began the season with the Tri-City (Pasco, Wash.) Dust Devils of the Short-Season Class A Northwest League

Zack Bowers is catching for the AZL Giants. He ade professional debut on June 25 and appeared in seven games and is 1-for-22 with a double and three walks. UGA Years: 2013-15

Ryan Lawlor is a left-handed pitcher for the Danville (Va.) Braves in the Appalachian Rookie League. He is 0-0 with a 0.90 ERA in six starts in 20 innings with nine walks and 17 strikeouts. Lawlor was a Diamond Dawg from 2014-15

Sean McLaughlin is a relief pitcher for the Danville (Va.) Braves in the Appalachian Rookie League. He is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in eight appearances. He has pitched 14 innings with five walks and 13 strikeouts McLaughlin was a Bulldog 2013-15

David Sosebee is a relief pitcher for the Pulaski (N.Y.) Yankees in the Rookie Appalachian League. He is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in six appearances,17 innings pitched with four walks and 17 strikeouts. Sosebee played for Georgia from 2012-15

Jared Walsh is a first baseman for the AZL Angels in the Rookie Arizona League. He is batting .323 with three doubles, three triples, a grand slam and 15 RBI in 13 games. His Georgia years were 2012-15
