The Georgia football team missed out on an in-state player who is also the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the 2016 recruiting class.

According to Jeff Sentell of DawgNation, Kyle Davis (6’1’’, 217-pounds) has chosen to play college football next season at Auburn where he will enroll in January. He chose the plains over Georgia and Tennessee.

The Lawrenceville, Georgia (Archer High School) standout remained relatively quiet throughout his recruitment process since de-committing from South Carolina at the beginning of 2015. Still, Georgia seemed like the obvious front-runner with the local connection, Jacob Eason coming in January, and the need for talented wide receivers at the school.

This announcement serves as another example in a line of bad news for the Dawgs at the wide receiver position in the class of 2016. Last Thursday, three-star receiver Davion Curtis de-committed from UGA and picked Texas. On the same day, another three-star wideout, Grant Holloway, decided to run track at Florida instead of play football for the Dawgs.

Now Georgia is left with just four commits at the position. With the news of Davis it would seem like the Dawgs would shift their focus to receivers Keith Gavin (Crawfordville, FL/Wakulla High School) and Tyler Simmons (Powder Springs, GA/McEachern High School).

Gavin (6’3’’, 211-pounds) could fill the shoes of Davis considering is comparable size. He is a four-star prospect according to 247Sports that is being heavily recruited by both Alabama and Florida State.

Simmons (5’11’’, 194-pounds) is a three-star speedster who runs a 4.41 40-yard dash. He is considering California, Alabama, Kansas State and Texas A&M, along with UGA. The local product seems to be leaning towards Georgia, and it should help that his teammate Julian Rochester has already committed to play in Athens.

Before a week ago the Dawgs seemed to be in great shape at this position. Now, it seems like they may need to work some magic in the final months of recruiting to salvage a solid core of receivers in this class.
