The rumors about Jeremy Pruitt leaving the University of Georgia are officially true. The school that he landed at may be somewhat of a surprise though.

According to Seth Emerson of DawgNation, Pruitt has officially accepted the defensive coordinator position at the University of Alabama. He will not coach in Georgia’s bowl game on January 2nd.

This is a classic switch-a-roo. Kirby Smart leaves Alabama to go back to Georgia where he played his college football, and Pruitt leaves Georgia to return to Alabama where he played and recently coached from 2007-2012. The only difference is Pruitt will start right away for the Tide.

The situation surrounding Pruitt and Smart is even more interesting when it pertains to recruiting. Both are already off and running in their new positions, and they will be recruiting mostly the same kids they had before just at a new school. Just as there was buzz surrounding some Alabama-commits now looking at Georgia as an option, the same should rein true with Georgia-commits looking at Alabama.

In Pruitt’s six years at Alabama, he was a part of three national championship teams as the director of player development and the defensive backs coach.

Georgia will surely miss Pruitt and his impact on this Bulldog defense. This season the team ranked ninth in points against (16.9) and fifth in total defense. He has changed the culture for this defense in just his two short seasons in Athens, and it especially showed in 2015 with the offense struggling.

The Bulldogs may have gotten their man in Smart, but Alabama has proven once again they have not lost a step. Their defense will be under a similar tutelage, and it seems the Tide will continue to be in national contention for many more years to come.
