The Georgia men’s basketball team had not beaten Georgia Tech in five years. Their four-game losing streak against the Yellow Jackets came even as the programs were going in opposite directions, with Georgia starting to make a name for itself in the SEC and Tech fading into the ACC basement.
Saturday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Georgia (5-3) dominated the Jackets 75-61 thanks in large part to J.J. Frazier. His performance propelled him to be named the SEC Player of the Week.

The junior put up a season and game-high 35 points, two shy of his career-high, on 9-of-14 shooting from the field (64.3 percent). He also hit 6-of-9 three-pointers and 11-of-12 shots from the free throw line. His four assists and three rebounds contributed to the team’s success as well.
Frazier’s 35 points is the most recorded by a Georgia player against the Yellow Jackets ever, topping the previous mark of 32 set back in 1974.
After trailing 34-33 at halftime, Frazier took control of the game scoring 22 second half points to lead the charge. He was also extremely effective controlling the tempo and not turning the ball over. His one turnover came with 19 seconds left in the game as a result of cramping.

The experienced starting five of Georgia has continued to rack up minutes because of the team’s young bench. Frazier played 33 of the game’s 40 minutes, while the other four starters all played at least 25 minutes. The 5’10’’ guard now ranks second on the team in minutes (29.6), points (16.0) and rebounds (4.8) per game.
Frazier is the second Georgia player this season to receive the honor as Kenny Gaines was awarded co-SEC Player of the Week honors at the start of the year.
