While we all know that 2019 is a long way away, UGA’s class is already starting to look exciting. Two of Georgia Football’s recruits from that year recently ended up as top 10 players in 247sports new Top247 rankings for 2019. Below is a quick look at where UGA’s current 4 commitments line up in the rankings.

Nolan Smith II, #4 overall, #2 WDE:

Nolan Smith II, the defensive end who committed to UGA this February has jumped up to the #4 overall ranked player. This is a big jump up of 30 spots but its not particularly surprising. Smith was dominant at the Nike Opening event in Florida this year. He recently transferred high school from Savannah to IMG Academy. He has been training and learning behind Xavier Thomas, the #2 ranked player in the 2018 class and top ranked DE.

Smith posted seriously impressive athletic numbers at the opening. The kind of eye popping ones that few were expecting but clearly show that he is a special athlete. He’s also the kind of mature and smart kid that programs would love to have lead their team. A recent profile by Dawgnation’s Jeff Sentell talked about how he spent his Christmas day feeding the homeless in his hometown.

He’s also still the pied piper of this particular UGA class. By the time 2019 is finished, don’t be surprised if fans talk about him in the same way they did Richard Lecounte III this year.

Jadon Haselwood, #6 Overall, #1 WR:

Jadon Haselwood has also jumped up and is now the nations #1 wide receiver. He’d taken the #6 overall spot in the class as well. He’s already long and explosive and the potential is clearly there. It’s going to be exciting to see how he develops into his frame over the next couple of years.

While Georgia has signed several receivers in 2017, Haselwood is the first truly ‘elite’ player at that position UGA has signed since AJ Green. UGA is still very much in the mix for 2 other elite 5 stars from Georgia Dominick Blaylock and Jashawn Sheffield. Adding another one of these, or both could really make this class special.

Rashad Cheney, #148 overall, #8 DT:

Cheney has kind of surged recently after his commitment to UGA. Since that day, he has received offers from multiple SEC programs and the big boys at bama are knocking on his door. Cheney looks like the kind of player who is going to put on weight the next couple of years and could move even higher up the boards. Explosive defensive tackles are always sought after and he will be no different.

Luke Griffin, #213 overall, #26 OT:

Griffin experienced a big drop in the rankings. He was previously a top 70 player and a top 10 OT but a knee injury this year hit his rankings. That being said, the first 2019 player to commit to UGA still has plenty of time to push back up the board and he should be expected to. Despite being only 16, he stands at over 6-5 and 275lbs. If he comes back fit and healthy from his injury, look for him to start climbing the board again pretty quickly.
