It was a weekend that few were expecting for the Georgia Tennis team. The womens side, that was favored to knock out #12 ranked Pepperdine ended up losing a tough match.  It was a somewhat surprising loss for the dawgs, who had started the tournament off really strongly. They simply came up against an in form opponant. Pepperdine has is ow on a 19 match winning streak and has not been defeated since March 11th. They’re probably the hottest team in the tournament right now and narrowly defeated the lady dawgs 4-3.

On the positive side, the Men’s team followed up their victory over highly favored USC with another win over another California school. UCLA were the #5 ranked team going into the tournament and many were expecting them to challenge the Trojans in the Quarters. But the dawgs spoiled that grudge match when the beat USC in the round of 16.

The match itself was upset by a weather delay that involved more than 5 hours of both teams waiting. Having started the match at 4pm, they were forced to suspend play at 6pm due to thunderstorms. The match restarted at 11pm and UGA were able to overcome the delay to win the rubber 4-2. Dawgnation reporter Tori Mcelhaney wrote a fantastic account of the dawg’s victory.

It’s been a great journey for a very young Georgia team. They have been able to over come two schools they lost to earlier in the season and it’s great to see them win despite challenging circumstances. They now have today to rest up, because they are onto the final four on Monday. So long as the poor weather holds off, the dawgs will take on North Carolina at noon.
